Insider predicts if Giants will get quarterback with NFL Draft pick No. 6

The New York Giants are routinely linked in stories with quarterback prospects ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, but ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter sounds unconvinced the club will spend its sixth overall pick on a signal-caller.

"I wouldn’t guess that they go quarterback at six right now," Schefter said about the Giants on the latest edition of the "Talkin' Ball with Pat Leonard" podcast, as shared by Bridget Hyland of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com.

Schefter added that he could see the Giants taking a quarterback in either the second or third round of the draft. He also suggested they could "move back up" into the first round to take a flier on either Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix of the Oregon Ducks.

Reporters who produce mock drafts on a weekly basis have predicted throughout this offseason that the Giants will move up from the sixth pick to choice No. 3 or No. 4 to land an eventual replacement for 2023 Week 1 starting quarterback Daniel Jones.

While it seems certain that the Chicago Bears will make USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams the draft's first pick, it's unclear if the Washington Commanders will take Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels, Jayden Daniels of the LSU Tigers or J.J. McCarthy of the Michigan Wolverines at No. 2.

The New England Patriots hold the third pick and are expected to draft a signal-caller.

Giants General Manager Joe Schoen recently indicated he'd let a team such as the Minnesota Vikings move up to No. 4 for a quarterback and then take "the second-best position player" with the sixth choice.

Schefter noted a Giants team that finished this past season at 6-11 has numerous holes throughout its roster.

"But to go quarterback at six, when there’s going to be some incredible players on the board when they have some of the needs that they do, I think I would be a little surprised," Schefter added about the Giants. "...If I were making a friendly wager with you, I would say they’re more likely to go wide receiver or offensive lineman than quarterback at six. But I do think quarterback is square on their radar."

Penix's stock has risen to the point that some now think he and Nix may not make it into the second round of the draft.

Trading back into the first round would be cheaper than what it would cost Schoen to go from No. 6 to No. 4, but Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic is among those who have said Schoen could trade down from the sixth pick to acquire assets needed to bolster a roster that did Jones few favors this past fall.
