Yankees Reliever 'Alert and Oriented' After Scary Incident

The New York Yankees were able to battle back from a deficit against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night to win the game 7-5.

That was not the story that came out of the game though.

Yankees reliever Anthony Misiewicz was carted off the field after a scary incident resulted in him taking a line drive off the left side of his head in the sixth inning.

The 28-year-old was struck by a 100.6 miles per hour hit off the bat after he pitched to Pirates second baseman Ji Hwan Bae.

Misiewicz fell on the ground and rolled over in pain before the Yankees' medical staff got to him and applied a towel to prevent further bleeding.

Both teams took a knee on the field as he was tended to by the medical staff.

Bae kneeled on first base with tears in his eyes, visibly shaken up by the play.

"I saw the ball going through to him and I saw his face, too, so I got a little bit of shock. I was just feeling really sorry about it. It was an accident. Nothing we can do. Just praying," he said after the game.

Good news is that New York's official social media page posted an update saying Misiewicz was "alert and oriented" when getting assessed by Pittsburgh team doctors. He has been transported to Allegheny General Hospital to undergo further testing.

Gerrit Cole told Jake Crouse of MLB.com, "I was sick to my stomach about it. I’ve been hit in the head on that mound, not quite like that, but I’ve seen some other guys get smoked, and you’re just praying for him, really."

Manager Aaron Boone said Misiewicz has undergone a scan, but they are waiting for the results to come back.
